Earth Robe
2014-2015
living moss, soil, wheatgrass, cheesecloth, tea, sod, wood, burlap, cotton.
4' x 3' x 5.5'
This wearable cloth robe is made of all natural fibers, living moss and seed. The wheatgrass is woven into the moss and fabric and encouraged to grow into the sculpture with continuous care and attention needed. The museum staff and visitors are asked to taste the sweet sprouts, and care for the organism and witness the death of the seeds over time. The robe becomes a living organism that is figurative, amorphous, and visceral.
This work was made by the request of the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery for the 50/50 Almuni Exhibition for the 50th Anniversary of the University of California Santa Cruz. It was exhibited for 4 weeks at the R. Blitzer Gallery in 2015.
