This work illustrates the current conditions of the San Lorenzo River watershed. By employing live bacteria to selectively activate water capsules in the shape of the river body within the watershed boundary the natural form becomes hidden from sight, only appearing when one looks closely to discover something living and beautiful. The bacteria will live only for 25 days, at which point the river shape will disappear.
Bacteria Map is an interactive map of the San Lorenzo River Watershed made as part of the Summer Art Works Residency at the Museum of Art and History in 2016, with the assistance of the California Watershed Council and River Scientist Alev Bilginsoy.
Visitors were invited to participate in the creation of the piece, as well as interact with the finished work by using the hand-held blacklight to reveal the hidden river body within the Santa Cruz landscape.
